Skate Canada has announced it will host the 2016 Autumn Classic International at the Sportsplexe Pierrefonds in Montreal from September 28 to October 1.

The senior international figure skating competition will be part of the International Skating Union’s (ISU) Challenger Series after a one-year hiatus.

Senior events for men, women, pairs and ice dancers are set to feature some of the top skaters in the world.

A junior men and women's competition will also take place, though it will not be included in the Challenger Series.

"Skate Canada is pleased to be back in the ISU Challenger Series and we are excited to be heading to Montreal," said Dan Thompson, chief executive of Skate Canada.

"This is a great opportunity for skaters to collect valuable world standing points."

The 2016 Autumn Classic International is one of 10 competitions that will form the Challenger Series.

The Canadian city of Barrie hosted the event in 2014 and 2015, with last year’s competition featuring 52 entries from 21 countries.

Competitors are eligible to participate in up to three Challenger Series events, with athletes at senior level having the opportunity to earn world ranking points.

Earlier this year, it was announced that Canada's capital Ottawa will host the country's National Skating Championships in 2017.

The event, sponsored by Canadian Tire, will be the first sporting event in Ottawa's year-long celebration of Canada's 150th anniversary.

Skaters will convene at TD Place Arena between January 16 and 22, with approximately 250 competitors expected in the men's, women's, pair and ice dance disciplines at senior, junior and novice level.

Athletes will vie for spots on the Skate Canada national side and the Canadian teams that will compete at the 2017 ISU World Figure Skating Championships in Helsinki, the 2017 ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships, due to held in Gangneung and used as a test event for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, and the 2017 ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships in Chinese Taipei.
