European Athletics has awarded its new Under-18 Championships to Győr and Rieti ©European Athletics

Győr and Rieti have been awarded the 2018 and 2020 European Athletics Under-18 Championships, it has been announced.

European Athletics' ruling Council decided at its meeting in Amsterday that Győr in Hungary will host the 2018 event and Rieti in Italy the 2020 edition.

The new event is due to make its debut on the calendar later this year. 

“Both candidates presented strong bids and the Council felt secure in allocating both events at once,” European Athletics President Svein Arne Hansen said. 

“We also look forward to being part of the inaugural edition of the Championships to be held in Tbilisi, Georgia, from 14-17 July 2016.”

Tbilisi hosted last year's European Youth Olympic Festival, an event that Győr is scheduled to hold in 2017. 

Rieti has hosted several major junior championships.

These have included the 2013 European Athletics Junior Championships.

European Athletics had yesterday awarded the 2019 European Indoor Championships to Glasgow.
