Belarus’ Melitina Staniouta topped the rhythmic all-around qualification standings at the Rio 2016 gymnastics test event today as the battle for the remaining individual Olympic slots concluded.

Staniouta, who squalified for her second Olympics at last year’s World Championships in Stuttgart, took full advantage of an invitation to compete as the reigning world all-around bronze medallist.

Excelling on all apparatus, she posted an unrivalled total of 72.215 points at the Rio Olympic Arena.

Kazakhstan's Sabina Ashirbayeva, one of the favourites going into the test event, won the competition among gymnasts hoping to qualify for Rio 2016 after totalling 69.500 points.

Austria’s Nicol Ruprecht earned the right to return to Rio de Janeiro this summer with a total of 67.466 points proving enough for third place.

She will be joined by Italy's Veronica Bertolini, Finland's Ekaterina Volkova, Uzbekistan's Anastasiya Serdyukova, Romania's Ana Luiza Filiorianu, Chinese newcomer Shang Rong and Germany's Jana Berezko-Marggrander, who completed the top nine.

The Olympic hopes of Uzbekistan’s Elizaveta Nazarenkova were dashed, however, after she dropped the ball, a club and the ribbon successively.

It came seven months after a 16th-place finish at the World Championships had seen her narrowly miss out on qualifying her country directly to the Games.

As Olympic hosts, Brazil were assured a place at Rio 2016 regardless of the results of the test event.

While Natalia Gaudio finished lower down the scoreboard than Nazarenkova in 17th, she is guaranteed a spot.

Each continent must be represented at the Games, meaning Australia's Danielle Prince has also obtained a spt, while the gymnast who will represent Africa has yet to be determined.

Fifteen of the 26 slots for individual competition were attributed at the World Championships.

The test event's all-around finals are due to take place tomorrow.
