Turkey’s Murat Giginoglu and Volkan Gogtepe earned two wins on the opening day of men's pool play at the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Fuzhou Open in China.

After beating Venezuela’s Jesus Villafañe and Jackson Henriquez 21-13, 21-19 in their first pool match, they then overcame Germany’s Armin Dollinger and Lorenz Schümann 21-11, 20-22, 15-13.

Giginoglu and Gogtepe are vying for a top-three finish in Fuzhou and the back-to-back victories put them second in Pool B behind Canada’s Chaim Schalk and Ben Saxton.

"We are feeling a little tired after today’s second game, but with two wins we are happy and congratulations to my partner and coach and the other teams we played today," said Giginoglu.

"It’s a good feeling.

"Tomorrow we play Canada for first position in the pool and we will try to win."

There was a surprise result in Pool C as 14th seeds Michal Kadziola and Jakub Szalankiewicz of Poland fell to a 13-21, 17-21 defeat at the hands of 30th seeds Likejiang Ha and Jian Bao of China.

Victory puts the home favourites second in their group ahead of their final match against Germany’s Stefan Windscheif and Sebastian Fuchs.
