Norway’s Svein Oddmund Solhaug and Daniel Bergerud advanced to the main draw at an International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) World Tour event for the first time this season as the Fuzhou Open began in China today.

The duo overcame the qualifying tournament's second seeds Philip Gabathuler and Mirco Gerson in their second round match to take their place in the group stages.

Their clash against the Swiss pair went the distance with the Norwegians eventually triumphing 23-21, 19-21, 15-13.

In the first round, they proved too strong for Jan Dumek and Pavel Rotrekl of the Czech Republic, 21-12, 21-15.

Also through to the main draw are Austrians Thomas Kunert and Christoph Dressler, who beat Americans Mark Edwin Burik and Ian Satterfield 22-20, 18-21, 15-12 in their decisive encounter.

In the first round the top qualification seeds had received a bye.

“It was an exhausting game," said Kunert.

"I think USA, they played really well.

"The side out was really good and we had some problems to break them, but in the end we risked on the serve and made a good serve so I think a little bit of luck in the end and we made it finally."

Dressler added: “We’ve never played them before, we just know one by watching, but we saw their previous game and those two are really good at serving and really good at defending and they really play with heart, they play like Americans so it’s difficult to play them."

Elsewhere, Norway's Oivind Hordvik and Bjarte Usken are also through after a 21-18, 21-15 second round win over Serbia's Stefan Basta and Lazar Kolaric.

Armin Dollinger and Lorenz Schumann of Germany came through in three sets against Michal Bryl and Kacper Kujawiak of Poland, 16-21, 21-15, 15-11.

The main men's draw and women's qualifying rounds will begin in Fuzhou tomorrow.
