Great Britain claimed three men’s titles on the first day of finals at the International Boxing Association (AIBA) European Olympic Qualification Event at the Mustafa Dağıstanlı Spor Salonu in Samsun.

Galal Yafai was the first of three Britons to add a gold medal to Rio 2016 qualification after beating Armenia's Artur Hovhannisyan in the light flyweight showdown.

Flyweight Muhammad Ali saw off another Armenian, Narek Abgaryan, and Josh Buatsi beat number one light heavyweight seed Peter Mullenberg of The Netherlands.

British bantamweight Qais Ashfaq had to settle for silver, however, after losing by a unanimous points decision against Azerbaijan's Javid Chalabiyev, a former world champion.

There were also triumphs for French middleweight Christian Mbilli Assomo, thanks to a walkover win against Hungary’s Zoltan Harcsa, and Lithuanian weltwerweight, Eimantas Stanionis, who edged Italy’s Vincenzo Mangiacapre.

Middleweight Anthony Fowler became the ninth British boxer to secure a place at Rio 2016 after winning his box-off against Germany’s Xhek Paskali on a unanimous points decision.

Despite losing two finals, Armenia could take solace from box-off victories for bantamweight Aram Avagyan and welterweight Vladimir Margaryan against Ukraine’s Mykola Butsenko and Moldova’s Vasilii Belous respectively, thus securing two Olympic berths.

Italy’s Manuel Cappai overcame Spain’s Samuel Carmona Heredia in the light flyweight box-off, while there were also wins for Irish flyweight Brendan Irvine and Turkish light heavyweight Mehmet Nadir Unal as Bulgaria’s Daniel Asenov and Ukraine’s Oleksandr Khyzhniak missed out on Rio 2016 spots.

Male boxers have two more opportunities to qualify for this summer's Olympics; one at next month's World Series of Boxing event in Bulgaria and the other at the final Olympic qualifying event in Azerbaijan in June.

The remaining finals and box-offs, including the women’s, are due to take place tomorrow.
