Home hero Alisa Buchinger advanced to the final of the women’s under 68 kilogram kumite event at the Karate 1-Premier League in Salzburg.

The Austrian, who is the reigning European champion, saw off competition from Serbia’s Jovana Vulinovic in the semi-final stage of the competition to secure at least a silver medal.

Buchinger will face the challenge of Belgium’s Luana Debatty in the gold medal contest, which is scheduled to take place tomorrow.

“Last year I lost in the first round here, and it is not good to lose in front of your family and friends, so, today it was a good day for me,” said Buchinger, who won bronze at the Rotterdam Karate 1-Premier League event in March.

“I am very happy that I could qualify for the final.

“I expect a good fight, and I hope I can use a good technique tomorrow.

“I hope that I will be able to use the support to win."

Buchinger’s compatriot Bettina Plank could deliver further home success, after she advanced to the final of the under 50kg kumite event.

She will look to claim gold for the second consecutive event, having triumphed in Dubai last weekend, when she faces Japan’s Ayaka Tadano.

Another home favourite, Thomas Kaserer, will meet Brazil’s Vinicius Figueira in the under 67kg men’s kumite final.

Japan have already been assured of gold in the men’s under 75 kumite competition, with Daisuke Watanabe and Ken Nishimura having both advanced to the final.

Serbia’s Marko Antic and Montenegro’s Emil Pavlov are due to clash in the men’s under 60kg kumite final, while Italy’s Nicole Forcella and Peru’s Alexandra Grande will meet in the women’s 61kg event.

Tomorrow’s finals will be broadcast live on the World Karate Federation’s YouTube channel here.
