North Korea and Thailand each secured two Rio 2016 berths on a successful day at the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament in Hong Kong.

Competing in the second stage of the women’s singles event, Ri Myong Sun beat India’s Mouma Das 11-3, 11-9, 12-10, 11-5, while fellow North Korean Kim Song I accounted for Indonesia’s Lilis Indriani 11-1, 11-4, 11-6, 11-5.

Thailand’s Suthasini Sawettabut beat Uzbekistan’s Rimma Gufranova in straight games before compatriot Nanthana Komwong, the world number 84, eventually overcame the Philippines' Ian Lariba after being extended the full distance.

Kim and Sawettabut will be making their Olympic debut at Rio 2016 having both represented their countries at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.

This summer’s Games will be a fifth consecutive for Komwong, who has been an ever-present since making her first appearance at Sydney 2000, and a second successive for London 2012 Olympian Ri.

"I’m very happy to finally achieve my dream to go to the Olympic Games," said Sawettabut.

"Every player who has qualified for Rio will be strong and I don’t want to set any expectations yet, just see how far I can go.

"My goal for Rio is just to play my best in every match, every point regardless who my opponent might be."

Das and Lariba recovered from their defeats, claiming the two remaining Rio 2016 places in the women’s singles event with victories over Gufranova and Indriani respectively.

Denmark’s Jonathan Groth beat Frenchman Simon Gauzy 11-2, 11-7, 11-3, 5-11, 9-11, 11-3 in the final of the blue draw to reserve his place at Rio 2016.

His success came after Gauzy’s team-mate Emmanuel Lebesson saved a match point on his way to overcoming Ukraine’s Kou Lei 11-9, 7-11, 6-11, 11-9, 14-12, 9-11, 12-10.

Kou went on to defeat Gauzy in six games to secure the final place.

There were initially mixed emotions for the hosts in the women’s singles event as Li Fen beat Ukraine’s Tetyana Bilenko 11-5, 12-10, 11-9, 11-6 in the blue draw, before Matilda Ekholm fell to an agonising 5-11, 11-5, 11-13, 11-5, 11-8, 4-11, 15-13 defeat against The Netherlands’ Li Jie in the red draw.

Ekholm bounced back, however, beating Bilenko in straight games to clinch the last spot.
