Indonesia’s Lilis Indriani is on the verge of booking her place at Rio 2016 after picking up an important women’s singles win at the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Asian Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Hong Kong.

Indriani accounted for Kazakhstan’s Yuliya Gats 11-4, 6-11, 11-3, 11-8, 11-13, 11-8 to advance to the round that determines Olympic qualification.

The world number 296 is competing in stage two of the competition in which all players who did not emerge as champions in their respective zones in stage one are eligible to compete.

"I was very nervous during the match; I lost to Gats when we met last year at the World Championships," said Indriani.

The Indonesian now goes on to face North Korea’s Kim Song I, the world number 53, who overcame Uzbekistan’s Regina Kim 11-4, 11-6, 11-3, 11-7.

The Philippines’ Ian Lariba also secured her place in the decisive round after defeating Iran’s Majobeh Omrani 11-6, 15-13, 11-8, 7-11, 10-12, 11-8.

"We played against each other at the World Championships in Malaysia and she beat me 4-0; so today, entering into this match I told myself that I have to forget about that match and start from zero," said the world number 324.

"I told myself to enjoy the match, focus on my strengths and play each point at a time."

Lariba next meets Thailand’s Nanthana Komwong, the world number 84, who reserved her place in the crucial contest by overcoming Lebanon’s Malal Khory 11-2, 11-2, 11-3, 11-5.

The two other second-stage finals see North Korea’s Ri Myong Sun challenge India’s Mouma Das and Thailand’s Suthasini Sawettabut go up against Uzbekistan's Rimma Gufranova with Olympic places up for grabs.

China, Japan, South Korea and Singapore did not enter players in the second stage with the four nations likely to be prominent in the ITTF Olympic singles ranking list issued next month.

Players who have participated in the continental qualification events, but did not qualify, are eligible for qualification via the list.

The 22 highest eligible players may qualify by this method with a maximum of two players per National Olympic Committee able to compete in the women’s singles event at Rio 2016.

Action also continued today at the ITTF European Olympic Qualification Tournament in Swedish city Halmstad.

Croatia's Zoran Primorac suffered a 4-1 first-round defeat at the hands of Sweden's Kristian Karlsson in the second stage of the men's singles event.

The 46-year-old, who alongside Ilija Lupulesku was a men's doubles silver medallist for Yugoslavia at Seoul 1988, is aiming to reach his eighth consecutive Olympic Games.

"It is not over for me - I still have theoretical chances to gain my visa for Rio," said the world number 99.

"We have the Polish Open next week and with a good performance I can gain a lot of points there."
