Action begun yesterday at the 49er and 49erFX European Championship in Barcelona, where The Netherlands' emerging stars Annemiek Bekkering and Annette Duetz started in same dominant manner that they finished the Trofeo Princesa Sofía last week.

The Dutch duo took four straight wins, but with only 18 boats per qualifying fleet in the 49erFX, the overall lead they were able to build up was only a handful of points with most of the contenders following closely behind.

The yellow fleet got the 49er racing under way with all three active Olympic class medallists going up against one another.

Once again, it was the London 2012 silver medallists Peter Burling and Blair Tuke of New Zealand who got the best start of all.

The duo, unbeaten in 24 consecutive 49er regattas, passed Beijing 2008 gold medallist Jonas Warrer and Christian Peter Stephensen Lübeck of Denmark at the top mark in the first race and then overtook them again in the second race on outright downwind boat speed.

In the third race of the day, it was London 2012 gold medallists Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen of Australia who triumphed with Burling and Tuke close behind.

In the blue 49er fleet, world silver medallists Nico Delle Karth and Niko Resch of Austria got off to a good start with a first, seventh and second to sit in second overall.

Today will see three 49erFX races take place followed by four 49er races.
