Austria’s Lara Vadlau and Jola Ogar were crowned winners of the women’s 470 European Open Championships after three further races were contested on the penultimate day of competition in the Bay of Palma in Spain.

The two-time world champions held a 24 point advantage over The Netherlands’ Afrodite Kyranakou and Anneloes Van Veen overnight to move to the brink of winning open and European titles at the event, which countries outside Europe are allowed to compete in.

Fourth and fifth place finishes in the opening two races of the day saw the pair's lead become unassailable, with the duo eventually heading into the tomorrow’s medal race standing at 29 points.

It followed their lowly 25th in the final race of the day being discarded, having been their worst result of the regatta so far.

Kyranakou and Van Veen earned two race victories to strengthen their grip of second place, with the pairing having moved onto 50 points.

Brazil’s Fernanda Oliveira and Ana Barbachan occupy third place in the open standings on 63 but the United States’ Annie Haeger and Briana Provancha are just four points adrift in pursuit of the bronze.

The Slovenian pairing of Tina Mrak and Veronika Macarol are on course to earn the European bronze medal, as they currently having a score of 71 points.
