A last-minute try by Jessica Javelet saw hosts the United States shock reigning champions New Zealand at the third round of the World Rugby Women's Sevens Series in Atlanta.

Javelet crossed the whitewash to give her side a surprise 12-5 win over the Kiwis, which also saw her country top Pool C with three wins out of three.

New Zealand, who saw off Japan and Spain in their two other fixtures - 38-5 and 10-5 respectively - still did enough to reach the quarter-finals as runners-up.

In Pool A, England topped the pile after racking up three victories of their own.

They started with a 21-7 win over rivals Australia before easing past Fiji 28-7.

Their final victory was a comfortable 45-0 success against Colombia.

Australia's 34-0 win over Colombia and 22-5 victory over Fiji saw them through as runners-up, with the Fijians also sneaking through as one two third place finishers after thrashing the Colombians 41-7.

In Pool B Canada won every match, starting with a 26-5 win over Russia and then easing past Ireland 29-5.

They edged past France 17-12 in the final encounter, with the French advancing as runners-up after a 22-0 thrashing of the Irish and a 22-7 win over Russia.

Russia beat Ireland 10-7 in the last match of the group which was enough to go through in third.

In tomorrow's quarter-finals at the Fifth Third Bank Stadium, England will play Russia while Canada will meet Fiji.

France will meet New Zealand while hosts United States will clash with Australia.
