A 110-strong British team for the 2016 Invictus Games in Orlando has been unveiled at Buckingham Palace in London.

Over 180 wounded, injured and sick serving personnel and veterans trialled in 10 sports for places in the team, with the selection process based on the benefit the second edition of the Games would give an individual as part of their recovery, as well as their performance and commitment to training.

The trials took place in January, with places in athletics, archery, wheelchair basketball, road cycling, powerlifting, indoor rowing, wheelchair rugby, swimming, sitting volleyball and wheelchair tennis on offer.

Prince Harry, patron of the Invictus Games Foundation, greeted the team who will compete at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando from May 8 to 12.

The team includes former Grenadier Guard, James McGill, who will compete in both athletics and swimming events.

McGill is an employee of Invictus Games’ partners Jaguar Land Rover and was encouraged to take part in trials along with other former and serving armed forces personnel colleagues, having joined the company in July 2015.

“I am hugely excited to be selected for the UK Team for the 2016 Invictus Games,” said McGill.

“Today has been a very special day, joining all my fellow team members at Buckingham Palace and meeting Prince Harry.

“The journey to selection has been tough, with so many great competitors in the mix, but the Invictus Games has given so many former and serving men and women a renewed focus and set of goals which should never be underestimated.”

The British team for the Paralympic-style multi-sport competition is being supported by The Ministry of Defence, Help for Heroes, and The Royal British Legion.

Prince Harry also presented the Invictus Games Flag to the United States’ team captain Will Reynolds, with the Flag Relay now due to take place in the host nation.

A 115-member United States team was announced last month, comprising of 23 competitors from the Air Force, 35 from the Army, 18 from the Navy, 22 from the Marines, and 17 from Special Operations Command.
