Three-time Olympic volleyball champion Mireya Luis Hernandez has been put forward as one of five candidates for the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Board of Administration in the minority gender election.

Under the FIVB statutes, two members of the gender in minority, currently women, will be elected at the FIVB’s 35th World Congress in Buenos Aires in October.

Hernandez, who won gold medals for Cuba at the Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, was one of the five unanimously approved by the FIVB Board during their two-day meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The 49-year-old is currently the beach volleyball director of the Cuban Volleyball Federation and an International Olympic Committee (IOC) Athlete Commission member.

Bouchra Hajij and Judith Rodriguez, Presidents of the Moroccan and Venezuela Volleyball Federations respectively, have also both been put forward as candidates.

Indonesia’s Rita Subowo, a current FIVB executive vice-president, and Scotland Volleyball Federation chief executive Margaret Ann Fleming complete the list of five candidates.

Each of the candidates will be vying for the two available positions, with terms due to last from 2016 and 2020.

The Board of Administration will ultimately consist of 32 members, including the President, 29 members from Confederations and the two members from the gender minority election.

The nominations come a day after it was announced that Brazil's Ary S. Graça will stand unopposed for re-election as the FIVB President for the next eight years.

His candidature was confirmed by the FIVB Board of Administration for the election on October 5 after the passing of the six month nominations deadline on Monday (April 4).

An Advisory Election Committee was also presented to the FIVB Board of Administration consisting of six members, including FIVB first executive vice-president, Cristóbal Marte Hoffiz of Dominica.

Luxembourg’s André Meyer and FIVB treasurer and African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB) President Amr M. Elwani have also been included, along with Asian Volleyball Confederation President Saleh Ahmad Bin Nasser.

The Committee is completed by Serbia’s Aleksandar Boricic and Colombia’s Rafael Lloreda Currea, the respective Presidents of the European and South American Volleyball Confederations.

The FIVB Congress is scheduled to take place between October 4 and 6.
