A squad of between 10 and 12 athletes is expected to be sent to September's Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro by the Sri Lanka Paralympic Committee, the organisation has announced.

Eight athletes are expected to lead the squad following impressive performances at last month's International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics Asia-Oceania Championships in Dubai.

Two rifle shooters, two archers and a table tennis player are expected to complete the delegation, although the precise names are yet to be confirmed.

“Hopeful participants have time until July this year to qualify for the Paralympics,” said Brigadier Rajitha Ampemohetty, vice-president and former President of the Sri Lanka Paralympic Committee, to the Sunday Times Sri Lanka.

“At the moment there is a 28 member pool in athletics undergoing training and a major section in the pool have qualified in their respective events."

Sri Lankans secured a strong haul of 15 medals, including six golds, to finish in sixth position in the medals table in Dubai.

One contender will be Pradeep Sanjaya, who claimed the nation's first ever Paralympic medal at London 2012 with bronze in the 400 metres T46 competition.

He finished third in the T47 category in Dubai as he bids to return to his best form.

Sri Lanka has participated in ever Summer Paralympics since Atlanta 1996 but has never competed in a winter edition.

Nine Sri Lankans participated in athletics and table tennis at London 2012.

The Rio 2016 Games are set to take place from September 7 to 18.
