A new blind football league has been set up in Europe in a bid to spread the sport to more countries, the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) has announced.

The competition, entitled the Central European Blind Football League 2016, will see four teams - LÁSS Budapest from Hungary, Sprint Wroclaw from Poland, AVNR Bacau from Romania and BSC Prague from the Czech Republic - battle it out for the title.

They will play each other in a round-robin format over four weekends, with one set of matches to be held in each country.

The Central European Blind Football League is due to begin from May 27 to 29 at the home of LASS Budapest in the Hungarian capital.

The league, set up by the four competing clubs, is then scheduled to move to Wroclaw in Poland from June 24 to 26 before heading to the Czech capital Prague for the penultimate round on September 2 to 4.

It will come to a close from October 14 to 16, in Buzău in Romania, home to AVNR Bacau, where the winner of the inaugural edition will be crowned.

An exact schedule for the competition is due to be released in the near future.

According to the IBSA, the tournament may be extended in future to allow further teams from other European nations to participate.

The governing body hope the league will help grow the sport of blind football in Europe and encourage more footballers to get involved.

The launch of the Central European Blind Football League comes after an IBSA Football training workshop involving local players and coaches in Portugal took place in Lausada, located in the northern area of the country.

The event was described as “successful” by participants and organisers alike.
