Mongolia's Gan-Erdene Gankhuyag stunned India's Commonwealth Games silver medallist Devendro Singh Laishram to secure qualification for Rio 2016 at the AIBA Asian/Oceanian Olympic Qualification Event in Qian’an in China.

The light flyweight progressed to this summer’s Olympics in the Brazilian city with a unanimous victory over the Indian fighter, a silver medallist at Glasgow 2014, in the box-off for the third and final Olympic place in the category.

Both competitors had suffered defeat in yesterday’s semi-finals but the contest offered them the chance to end the event on a positive note and it was Gankhuya who held his nerve to seal his place.

Hasanboy Dusmatov of Uzbekistan claimed the gold medal in the category by overcoming Rogen Ladon of the Philippines via split decision.

The disappointment for the Philippines continued as bantamweight Mario Fernandez, a Southeast Asian Games gold medallist, missed out on an Olympic berth after he was soundly beaten by Kairat Yeraliyev of Kazakhstan, who reached Rio 2016 with a unanimous verdict.

It was a similar story in the final as Thailand’s Chatchai Butdee ensured he topped the podium in the division with a comfortable win against India’s Shiva Thapa.

The third available Olympic spot in the middleweight category went to Australia's Daniel Lewis, the 22-year-old breezing to a confident triumph in his bout with Mongolian Shinebayar Narmandakh.

Kazakhstan’s Zhanibek Alimkhanuly silenced the home crowd in Qian’an by taking the gold medal as he stopped China’s Zhao Minggang in the second round of the final.

Alimkhanuly's team-mate Olzhas Sattibayev also qualified for the Olympics by winning the flyweight box-off with Kyrgyzstan’s Azat Usenaliev.

The fourth seed was awarded the fight on all of the judges' scorecards.

Shakhobidin Zoirov of Uzbekistan was involved in a nail-biting bout for the gold medal with home hope Hu Jianguan of China, edging a tight contest by split decision.

Top welterweight seed Eumir Felix Marcial was another Filipino boxer to miss out on claiming an Olympic place as he lost to Tuvshinbat Byamba, with the Mongolian awarded the fight 29-28 on the three scorecards.

Uzbekistan’s Shakhram Giyasov was crowned champion in the category as he accounted for Thailand’s Saylom Ardee in the final, securing the title by unanimous decision.

In the final weight category to be held on the penultimate day of action, Erkin Uulu Adylbek sealed a rare Rio 2016 spot for Kyrgyzstan, taking victory in the light heavyweight box-off.

Adylbek came up against a tricky opponent in Turkmenistan’s Aziz Achilov but negotiated the challenge with ease, booking his ticket to the Brazilian city with a unanimous win.

The gold medal in the category went to Elshod Rasulov of Uzbekistan after two judges chose him as the winner of his bout against top seed Adilbek Niyazymbetov of Kazakhstan, with the other unable to separate the two athletes.

The event in Qian’an is due to conclude tomorrow.
