Virat Kohli, the hero of India’s final group match against Australia, looked to have taken his team to the brink of victory after scoring an unbeaten 89.

Contributions of 40 and 43 from openers Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane had set up Kohli’s assault on the West Indian bowlers as the host’s set their rivals an imposing target of 193 to reach the final.

West Indies task looked increasingly grave when their talisman Chris Gayle and the dangerous Marlon Samuels were dismissed in the opening three overs, as they looked to achieve the second highest run chase in the tournament’s history.

A half-century from Johnson Charles and a brutal knock of 83 off 51 balls by Lendl Simmons saw the West Indies turn the match around and close on an unlikely victory.

The Indian team only had themselves to blame for Simmons’ stunning innings, with Ravichandran Ashwin and Hardik Pandya bowling no balls when the batsmen was caught.

Ravindra Jadeja also caught the batsman only to step over the rope to add another six to the tally, with Simmons and the quick-firing Andre Russell eventually taking the West Indies to their target with two balls to spare.

The seven-wicket win will see the West Indies meet England in the final on Sunday (April 3), which is due to take place at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Their could be a double celebration for the West Indies on Sunday, after Britney Cooper produced a superb batting display to also guide their women's team into the final for the first time.

After triumphing each of their group matches, New Zealand began the semi-final as the clear favourites and made an early breakthrough when they trapped Hayley Matthews leg before wicket in the third over.

Cooper survived a scare in the 11th over when New Zealand appealed in vain for a run out.

Cooper took full advantage to eventually reach 61.

Her departure in the final three overs failed to slow the West Indies charge as they posted a score of 143-6 from their 20 overs, despite a flurry of late wickets.

The loss of New Zealand’s leading run scores Sophie Devine and captain Suzie Bates raised the prospect of an upset, with the Kiwi’s starting to fall behind the required run rate.

Sara McGlashan and Amy Satterthwaite produced a strong stand of 59 but were caught off successive balls from Stafanie Taylor to leave New Zealand 108-5 in the final four overs.

The target proved too much for New Zealand as they fell six runs short on 137-8.

New Zealand have now suffered from double semi-final disappointed following their men’s team defeat to England yesterday.

The West Indies will now take on Australia in the final on Sunday.
