Japan's second seed Yui Hashimoto crashed out in the second round of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) New Zealand Open at the North Shore Events Centre in Auckland today.

She was beaten 21-17, 22-20 by compatriot Aya Ohori who advances into the quarter-finals.

South Korea's top seed Sung Ji-hyun had no such concerns after making it past China's Gao Fangjie, 21-15, 21-16.

Her team-mate Bae Yeon-ju, the number three seed, also did enough to advance with a 21-14, 21-12 success over Vietnam's Vu Thi Trang.

Both Americans bowed out, with number six and seven seeded Iris Wang and Rong Shafer both beaten in three tough games.

Wang lost to China's Chen Yufei, 21-14, 18-21, 21-18 as Shafer succumbed to Russia's Ksenia Polikarpova 20-22, 21-18, 21-17.

In the men's draw, South Korea's top seed Son Wan-Ho made the last eight as he saw off Israel's Misha Zilberman.

His compatriot Lee Dong-keun, the number three seed, joined him in going through by beating Malaysia's Goh Soon Huat 21-16, 21-15.

Chinese Taipei's fourth seed, Hsu Jen-hao, however, crashed out as he was beaten by Malaysian Soo Teck Zhi.

He triumphed 21-17, 21-10 as Hsu became the most high profile casualty so far.

There was bad news for the hosts, as all New Zealand interest was ended across the singles and doubles competitions.
