Lebanon’s Ray Bassil won the first gold medal of her career as the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Shotgun World Cup continued in Nicosia today.

The 27-year-old triumphed in the women's trap competition at the Nicosia Olympic Shooting Range in the Cypriot capital, beating Germany's Sonja Scheibl in the gold medal match.

In windy conditions, world number 20 Bassil made it through qualification after a four-way shoot-off thanks to a score of 68+1 hits.

The final saw Bassil take an early lead before Scheibl levelled after the first 12 targets.

The Lebanese pulled ahead again, however, hitting the final two targets to finish on 12 points with Scheibl in second on ten.

Spain's world champion Fatima Galvez beat Finland's Mopsi Veromaa to the bronze medal, 13 hits to nine.

Bassil enjoys Nicosia after winning a Junior World Championship bronze medal there in 2007.

"I had won that World Championship junior bronze here in Nicosia, and I had that thing in mind," she said.

"I told to myself ‘this is my range, and I have to win back my medal, any medal’ and I did it.

“Waking up this morning I was really positive, knowing that I would give my best.

"It has been a long day, but a really wonderful one.

“It has been really windy, compared to the other days when I had a chance to train here.

"I managed the situation mentally, I never thought about it, I just focused on the exit of the targets, and stuck to the same routine for every clay.

“Eventually, I had a very good final, I feel I am on the right track.”

The women's skeet final is due to take place in Nicosia tomorrow.
