Discussions on the third edition of the German Children and Youth Sports report were key at the German Olympic Sports Confederation's (DOSB) 84th Board meeting.

The meeting was held at the German Sports and Olympic Museum in Cologne, with a potential increase in the number of hours that children are able to take part in sport seen as the main issue.

It was outlined in the report that children and young people currently spend more time in both day-care and schools, limiting their opportunities to take part in sport at clubs.

Professors Werner Schmidt and Nils Neuber were present at the meeting and outlined that schools are still currently the most common provider of sport for young people.

They found that one in three extra-curricular options for young people are sport related, with numerous schools having coaches with DOSB qualifications.

They also outlined that primary school sport was still often taught by teachers without necessary qualifications, in contrast to other subjects.

The report outlined that the DOSB could use sport to help with children’s language development, while they could also increase the amount of talent scouting to find potential athletes for future German teams.

It was also revealed at the meeting that the Museum in Cologne is one of the top ten most popular in the North Rhine-Westphalia area.

More than 100,000 visitors were found to visit the museum each year, with 1000 guided tours taking place annually.

It was also revealed that 500 birthday parties are held at the location each year.

The DOSB expressed their hope that these will help encourage children to take part in sport.
