The 25-year-old double Olympic silver medallist was fourth after the short routine but dominated the free skate to clinch the title in the Taiwanese capital.

He reeled off a quadruple-triple toeloop, quadruple toeloop, two triple axels, four triple jumps and difficult spins and footwork in his routine to finish on 290.21 points.

It means that Chan has now won the Four Continents title on three occasions.

"I feel like all the work and the stress I had to go through this season with my coach and myself paid off," he said.

"It all came out in that program just the way it was supposed to be.

"It just felt exhilarating.

"I know this isn’t World Championships, but this is one step closer."

Chan's victory was the more impressive as he took a year off from skating last season, but he appears to have regained his form.

China’s Boyang Jin, who led after the short programme, had to settle for silver on 289.83 points while another Chinese, Han Yan, did enough for bronze with a tally of 271.55.

"I competed for the first time at the Four Continents and therefore I felt I’m competing against myself mainly," said Jin.

"I feel like my free skate is a challenge for myself from my first to my last jump.

"I performed quite well and I landed all the quads.

"But the quality of the jumps was not as good as today."

The men's action was the final medal event at the Championships, which are open to skaters from non-European countries.
