The 18-year-old looked stronger than ever as she cruised to gold in the women’s category B foil competition, beating Russia’s Ludmila Vasileva 15-3 in the final.

Vio, the reigning world champion, has not lost since the 2014 Grand Prix event in Poland’s capital Warsaw.

Also in formidable form was Ukraine’s Anton Datsko, who beat Italy’s Alessio Sarri 15-14 in the sabre event final having already sealed gold in the men’s foil category B with a win over Great Britain’s Dimitri Coutya.

Datsko, silver medallist in the men’s foil at the London 2012 Paralympics, scored the last crucial point in a thrilling encounter to take the title 15-14.

In the men’s épée category A, Britain’s Piers Gilliver looked to be on course for his first gold medal in five events as he overwhelmed Russia’s Viktor Dronov 15-1 in the semi-final.

But Dronov’s fellow countryman Artur Yusupov proved too strong in the final, taking victory by a single point.

Overall it was the Chinese squad that dominated the podium places in Eger, leaving with a total of 14 medals, including four golds.

Among the country's winners was Xu Feng Zhou, who erased the memory of an uncharacteristic ninth-place finish at December’s World Cup in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates by beating compatriot Chuncui Zhang 15-11 in the women’s épée category A final.

China’s women were denied a further gold in the team foil event as the home team of Gyöngi Dani, Eva Hajmasi and Zsuzsanna Krajnyak topped the podium after a narrow 45-42 victory.

Unfortunately for the locals, Krajnyak was not able to repeat this feat in individual competition as she had to settle for bronze after falling to defeat at the hands of China’s Jing Bian in the semi-final.

Bian was then beaten 15-9 by team-mate Jing Rong in the gold medal match.

In the men’s team épée final, Russia emerged victorious at the expense of France. 

The next event on the wheelchair fencing calendar is the IWAS Asian Championships, scheduled to take place in Hong Kong from April 6 to 11.
