Home favourite Julia Marino won the International Ski Federation (FIS) Snowboard Freestyle World Cup Big Air event at Boston’s Fenway Park after stepping in as a late replacement for team-mate Ty Walker.

The American rookie wasn’t originally scheduled to compete at the home of baseball team the Boston Red Sox, but came in off the alternate list when Walker was forced to drop out after suffering an injury in practice.

Marino produced three clean runs to finish with a final score of 169.25 points to take the win ahead of Canadians Jenna Blasman and Brooke Voigt on 152.25 and 117.75 respectively.

"It’s hard to find the words to describe how I feel right now, because I’m just so happy," said the 18-year-old.

"I wasn’t even in the contest until yesterday night.

"I was a forerunner, and now I was able to get in and put down my runs.

"I’m so stoked."

Marino entered the finals ranked second overall through the qualifying runs, then took the lead straight away in the finals and held on for victory before a crowd of nearly 12,000.

The women's final was held in a three-run format with the best two different tricks counting for the final score.

Roles were reversed in the men's event as Canada finished first and second, through Max Parrot and Michael Ciccarelli, with American veteran Chas Guldemond occupying the final step on the podium.

Parrot, the only one to perform a triple cork in the finals, ensured his second career win with 183.50 points ahead of team-mate Ciccarelli on 174 and Guldemond on 170.

"I planned to do a triple before the competition started, but I couldn’t land it in the practice," said the 21-year-old.

"But then, when I saw Mike was sitting in the first place, I knew I had to do it if I wanted to win.

"So I told myself, now it’s time to land it, and at the end it worked out pretty well."

The season's second and last Big Air event is due to take place in Quebec City, Canada on Saturday (February 13).
