The first-ever International Ski Federation (FIS) Freestyle Skiing Big Air World Cup is set for Boston's Fenway Park on Friday (February 12).

A large scaffolding competition ramp has been created at the venue in the American city - which is most famous for baseball as the home of the Boston Red Sox.

The structure rises 43 metres above centre field at the stadium, more than three times higher than the field's "Green Monster" left-field wall.

Big Air competitions see competitors slide down the ramp and perform tricks at great heights.

It is hoped that the skiing version will one day be a full medal event at the Winter Olympics - after Snowboarding Big Air was accepted on the programme for Pyeongchang 2018.

Olympic slopestyle medalists Joss Christensen, Gus Kenworthy, Bobby Brown and Devin Logan will be among those representing hosts the United States at Fenway, which will hold men's and women's competitions.

“I’ve done a bunch of stadium big airs,” said Kenworthy, a slopestyle silver medallist at Sochi 2014.

"I think that they’re really cool events that allow a new crowd to enjoy a ski event that never would have before.

"The photos that I’ve seen from Boston look amazing - it’s so big and tall that when you stand on top of the drop in you’re going to have panoramic views of the city.

"It’s just so cool to be in such an iconic stadium.”

Recent Winter X-Games champions Fabian Boesch of Switzerland and New Zealand's Jossi Wells will also be competing, as well as women's Slopestyle World Cup leader Tirij Sjaastad Christiansen of Norway.

As this is the only skiing Big Air World Cup event of the season, the champions will also claim the overall title.

Men's and women's Snowboarding Big Air World Cups will also be held at Fenway tomorrow.
