Final preparations are taking place for Qatar's National Sports Day on Tuesday (February 9th), an annual event celebrating the "significance of sport and its pioneering role in developing the life of individuals and communities".

Qatar is one of the few countries in which an official holiday honouring sport takes place, along with the likes of India and Malaysia.

The day was introduced in 2012 after an Emiri Decree ruling that it will be held annually in the second week of February.

Activities will be on offer across the Gulf nation for all ages and abilities, coordinated by the Qatar Olympic Committee, with the aim of embracing all those from novice to Olympic standard.

Identifying future top level talent is another aim of the day, with 30 sports on offer in all.

Qatar, which has won four Olympic medals, all of which were bronze, is looking to improve upon that at this summer's Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Teams have already secured qualification spots in equestrian, shooting and handball, where the men's team claimed a historic silver medal at last year's home World Championships.

They became the first non-European team to reach a World Championship final before narrowly losing to France.

London 2012 bronze medal winning high jumper Mutaz Essa Barshim and two-time world junior hammer champion Ashraf El Seify will also lead the Qatari athletics team.

All four of these sports will be available to try on National Sport Day, with the opportunity to "emulate these Olympic heroes".

Basketball, boxing and billiards are other sports which will hold demonstration events, along with the Qatar Paralympic Committee, who will hold an open sport day for people with special needs.
