Brazilian success continued at the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Latin American Championships as Vitor Ishiy and Caroline Kumahara earned the mixed doubles title in San Juan.

The pair were aiming to add to their country’s triumphs in the men’s and women’s team events by securing victory over Argentina’s Pablo Tabachnik and Ana Codina in the gold medal match on the penultimate day of competition in Puerto Rico's capital.

Ishiy and Kumahara were able to secure the opening game 11-7, but found themselves hauled back with their rivals winning a gruelling second 14-12.

It proved only a brief blip for the Brazilians, as they were able to claim the next two games 11-8 to secure victory.

“It was difficult playing against Pablo Tabachnik and Ana Codina with Pablo being left handed and Anna right handed,” said Kumahara, who had won the title previously with Eric Jouti in 2013.

“It was hard to move them out of position; they were always ready to play their forehands.”

Despite the defeat, Codina will hope to put the result behind her before joining Camila Arguelles in the women’s doubles final against Venezuela’s Gremlis Arvelo and Neridee Niño, which will take place tomorrow.

Kumahara is targeting double success as she also progressed to the semi-final of the women’s singles by recording an 11-7, 12-10, 7-11, 11-5, 11-3 win over Chile’s Felipe Olivares.

The 2013 winner will meet her compatriot and three-time champion Ligia Silva, after she ended home hopes of success by beating Puerto Rico’s Adriana Diaz 7-11, 11-8, 9-11, 8-11, 11-4, 11-9, 11-9.

Brazil are guaranteed a clean sweep of the women's singles medals as Bruna Takahashi overcame Colombia’s Paula Medina 11-9, 11-7, 6-11, 9-11, 8-11, 11-8, 11-5 to set up a last four tie against Gui Lin, who defeated Mexico’s Yadira Silva 8-11, 13-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-7, 15-13.

Hugo Calderano, the defending men’s champion, continued his serene progression through the rounds as he earned a straight games 11-7, 11-4, 11-9, 11-7 win over Chile’s Felipe Olivares in the quarter-finals stage.

The Brazilian will now take on Argentina’s Horacio Cifuentes, who won 12-10, 11-6, 12-10, 11-5 against Puerto Rico’s Brian Afanador.

Another home hope saw his challenge come to an end as Hector Berrios lost 11-5, 11-7, 11-9, 11-7 to Ecuador’s Alberto Miño, with the result setting him up for a semi-final match against Brazil’s Eric Jouti, who beat Mexico’s Marcos Madrid 12-10, 6-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-8, 5-11, 11-5.

The singles competitions will draw to a close tomorrow, along with the finals of the men’s and women’s doubles events.
