Australia's double world champion Isis Holt will headline the opening International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics Grand Prix event of the season in Canberra this weekend.

The 14-year-old produced a world record time of 13.63sec to win the women’s T35 100 metres title at last year's IPC World Championships in Doha, before setting backing up that performance to set a world record time of 28.57 in the 200m event.

Holt will begin as the clear favourite for victory in the 100m event when the two-day Grand Prix is due to begin tomorrow.

She could face competition, though, from fellow Australian Brianna Coop, the bronze medallist at the World Championships.

Around 90 athletes from nine countries are expected to take part in the event, which doubles as the Athletics Australian Capital Territory Championships.

Athletes from the host country will be expected to dominate the majority of the events, with their trio of Richard Colman, Rheed McCracken and Kurt Fearnley expected to battle for the medals in the men’s 400m wheelchair event.

Fearnley, winner of three Paralympic gold medals, will continue his rivalry with fellow marathon specialist Josh George, with the 2015 London Marathon winner aiming to prevent an all-Australian podium.

George, Fearnley and McCracken are also scheduled to compete in the men’s 800m event.

In the women’s 400m wheelchair event, Australia’s Angie Ballard will hope to continue on her stunning form from 2015.

The 33-year-old broke the T53 world record over the distance last June before earning two gold medals at the World Championships in the 200m and 400m competitions.

Japan’s Yuka Kiyama, winner of the 400m bronze medal in Doha, will join Australia’s Madison de Rozario and Rosemary Little in trying to claim a shock win over Ballard.

Atsushi Yamamoto will be another world champion on show.

The Japanese long jumper is hoping to claim the men’s title in Canberra, but will face competition in the F42/44 category from Britain’s Ryan Raghoo, New Zealand’s Ethan Rangi and Singapore’s Ngiap Kiang Loh.
