Austria’s Markus Salcher claimed the men’s downhill gold medal at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Alpine Skiing Europa Cup in Stara Planina today.

The double Paralympic gold medallist from Sochi 2014 continued his fierce rivalry with Aleksei Bugaev in the men’s standing competition at the Serbian venue.

Salcher had beaten the Russian at both World Cup speed races in Tignes last week and produced a time of 54.56sec to put the pressure on Bugaev.

It proved enough to claim victory as Bugaev was only able finish in 57.37 to take the silver medal.

His compatriot Alexander Vetrov ended in 58.86 to finish third.

South Korea, hosts of the 2018 Winter Paralympic Games in Pyeongchang, will be buoyed by the continued development of Sang Min Han in the men’s sitting class.

Having already won a giant slalom event at the Southern Hemisphere Cup earlier this season, he again showed his form during downhill event by setting a time of 1min 1.31sec.

Poland’s Igor Sikorskii and fellow South Korean Chi Won Lee were the closest to Sang Min Han but were eventually forced to settle for the silver and bronze medals, having produced times of 1:01.48 and 1:05.80 respectively.

The men’s visually impaired event saw the Czech Republic’s Patrik Hetmer claim top spot.

Along with his guide Miroslav Macala, Hetmer produced a time of 59.67 to defeat Maciej Krezel and his guide Anna Ogarzynska, who were 0.43 seconds  adrift.

Russia’s Ivan Frantsev earned the bronze medal, after being guided to a time of 1:00.55 by German Agranovskii.
