The six-team round robin competition has been described as a battle to be crowned "the best of the best" with spots in the tournament allocated to countries who win the major events on the hockey calendar.

Britain have received a host nation berth and will face the Argentinians, the 2014 winners and recently crowned Hockey World League champions, on June 18 at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre, a venue used at the London 2012 Olympics.

The hosts are expected to pick many of the players who featured in the England team who won the EuroHockey Championships last year, which also took place at Lee Valley.

Other games on the opening day will see reigning Olympic and World Cup holders Netherlands take on Australia, the world number three ranked side who are one of two countries to be invited to play by the International Hockey Federation (FIH).

Meanwhile, the United States, winners of the 2014 Champions Challenge I, a qualifying tournament for the Champions Trophy, will take on fourth in the world New Zealand who have also received an FIH invite.

The tournament, which runs until June 26, will be the last major action before the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro where hockey will begin on August 7.

All six countries will be bidding to finish in the top two after the round robin phase, in order to reach the final.

The men’s Hockey Champions Trophy 2016 will take place in a location yet to be confirmed in Argentina between June 11 and 19.

Olympic champions Germany will join the hosts, World Cup and Hockey World League winners Australia and 2014 Champions Challenge I holders South Korea, with two invited countries set to complete the field.
