The event, sponsored by Canadian Tire, will be the first sporting event in Ottawa's year-long celebration of Canada's 150th anniversary. 

Skaters will convene at TD Place Arena between January 16 and 22 with approximately 250 competitors expected in the men's, women's, pair and ice dance disciplines at senior, junior and novice level.

Athletes will vie for spots on the Skate Canada National Team and the Canadian teams that will compete at the 2017 International Skating Union (ISU) World Figure Skating Championships, 2017 ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships and 2017 ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships.

“I’m thrilled that Ottawa will once again be hosting the Canadian Tire National Skating Championships, this time in 2017," said the city's Mayor Jim Watson.

Ottawa staged the first National Championships in 1914 and has played host a further 13 times, most recently in 2014.

The World Championships were also held there in 1978 and 1984.

“We are excited to be back in Ottawa for the 2017 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships," said Dan Thompson, Skate Canada CEO.

“We are proud to be able to kick-off the National Capital’s celebrations for Canada’s 150th birthday celebrations.

"Like past years, we know the support from the community, fans and volunteers will allow for another amazing event that will inspire Canadians to embrace the joy of skating.”

This year's Canadian Championships were held in Halifax, with double Olympic silver medallist Patrick Chan winning the men's title in the Nova Scotia capital.

Alaine Chartrand won the women's title, while Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford took the pairs crown.

Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje were crowned as ice dancing champions.
