Reigning world champion Adeline Gray was among the gold medallists during the Rio 2016 freestyle wrestling test event, which took place from January 30 to 31.

The American, who successfully defended her under 75 kilogram title at September’s World Championships, continued to show her form as she aims to secure her first Olympic medal later this year.

Gray began the competition, which was staged in Carioca Arena 1, by defeating the home favourite Aline Silva and she advanced through the remaining rounds, before beating Canada’s Erica Wiebe in the final.

“The competition was wonderful, I think people are doing the best they can to make this Olympics the best,” Gray said afterwards.

“I am very happy with the high calibre that showed up today and that I came out on top.

“I am excited for the Olympics and am hoping to be the first female wrestling gold medallist from the United States.”

A total of 50 female wrestlers competed at the test event, which was the third to be staged in the Carioca Arena 1 this year.

Basketball and powerlifting competitions were both staged in January at the venue, located in the Barra Olympic Park, as Rio 2016 further their preparations for the Games.

As well as testing their venue management, the event saw results systems, volunteer operations and the competition area scrutinised, all of which were approved by the sport’s governing body United World Wrestling (UWW).

Of the eight nations which participated in the competition, China enjoyed the most success with Sun Yannan beating Russia’s Valentina Islamova in the under 48kg gold medal match, while Feng Zhou defeated Canada’s Dorothy Yeats in the 69kg final.

Their gold medal haul was completed when Zhong Xuechun overcame her team-mate Li Hui in the under 53kg event.

China’s wrestlers, though, were forced to settle for silver medals in the under 58kg and 63kg competitions, after Li Qian and Wang Xiaoqian were beaten in their respective divisions by Japan’s Yui Sakano and Canada’s Danielle Lappage.
