Men’s singles top seed Kidambi Srikanth of India finally got his hands on the Syed Modi International Badminton Championships crown as he overcame China’s Huang Yuxiang on home soil at the Babu Banarasi Das Indoor Stadium in Lucknow.

Following two successive defeats in the final, Srikanth banished the demons of previous losses as he claimed a hard-fought 21-13, 14-21, 21-14 win to the delight of the crowd inside the arena.

Commonwealth Games gold medallists Goh V Shem and Wee Kiong Tan of Malaysia sealed the men’s doubles title as they fended off the challenge of Indian duo Pranaav Chopra and Akshay Dewalkar.

The Malaysian pair had been in superb form throughout the tournament, part of the Badminton World Federation Grand Prix Gold series, but dropped the opening game.

They managed to recover, however, fighting back from that early setback by clinching a 14-21, 24-22, 21-8 victory.

The women’s singles competition played out as expected, although South Korean second seed Sung Ji-hyun, the highest-ranked player in the tournament, also had to come from behind to lift the title.

She came up against Japan’s Sayaka Sato in the final and the fifth seed started brightly by taking a one-game lead by virtue of a 21-12 scoreline in the opener.

But Sung showed she was made of stern mettle, levelling proceedings at 1-1 by securing the second 21-18.

The South Korean built on that momentum and ensured she was crowned winner of the event as she claimed the third game by the same scoreline.

The Asian nation enjoyed further success on the final day of competition as Jung Kyung-eun and Shin Seung-chan took full advantage of compatriots and top seeds Chang Ye-na and Lee So-hee crashing out at the semi-final stage by sealing the women’s doubles crown.

Jung and Shin, seeded second, proved too strong for Dutch duo Eefje Muskens and Selena Piek, wrapping up a 21-15, 21-13 victory in just 39 minutes.

Testament to the closely-contested nature of the majority of the finals at the event, the mixed doubles showpiece match also went the distance as Indonesian pair Praveen Jordan and Debby Susanato beat Thailand's Puavaranukroh Dechapol and Sapsiree Taerattanachai 23-25, 21-9, 21-16.
