Democratic Republic of Congo broke host nation hearts with an extra-time 2-1 victory to send Rwanda crashing out of the African Nations Championships in today's quarter-final at Kigali's Amahoro Stadium.

Doxa Gikanji gave had given the Congolese team the lead with just 12 minutes on the clock after taking advantage of some slack defending to fire home from outside the area.

But, roared on by a 30,000 capacity home crowd, Ernest Sugira eventually put the home side level with a neat finish from a 56th minute shot for his third goal of the tournament.

Sugira nearly lobbed home to put his side in front soon after but the game remained deadlocked after 90 minutes.

In a tense extra-time period, the game appeared to be heading towards a penalty shootout when Bompunga capitalised on a header across the six-year box to power home and put his team in the semi-finals.

It was far more comfortable for Ivory Coast in the day's other match as they ran out 3-0 winners over Cameroon at the Stade Huye Butare

Koffi Boua, Atcho Djobo and Serge N'Guessan all scored goals as the Ivorians proved far too strong.

Democratic Republic of Congo will now face the winner of tomorrow's match between Zambia and Guinea on Wednesday (February 3).

Ivory Coast will then face either Tunisia or Mali on Thursday (February 4).

The tournament, now in its fourth edition, differs from the more elite Africa Cup of Nations, as only players who represent clubs on the continent are allowed to take part.

The final is scheduled for February 7 at the Amahoro Stadium.
