Prospective athletes for the British team to compete at the Invictus Games received a royal visit today as Prince Harry attended the trials at the University of Bath Sports Training Village.

Prince Harry, a patron of the Invictus Games Foundation, visited the competitors who are aiming to earn a place in the 100-strong squad for the second edition of the event, due to take place at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando in Floride from May 8 to 12.

The trials, which began today and are scheduled to conclude on Sunday (January 31), are being held in 10 sports – athletics, archery, wheelchair basketball, road cycling, powerlifting, indoor rowing, wheelchair rugby, swimming, sitting volleyball and wheelchair tennis.

They are set to be attended by a host of new faces, as well as those who took part in the inaugural Invictus Games on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London in 2014.

Charity Help for Heroes are running the trials with the support of the Ministry of Defence and the Royal British Legion.

Britain’s team will be chosen according to the benefit the Invictus Games will give an individual as part of their recovery, as well as their commitment to training and performance level.

The event itself is a Paralympic-style multi-sport competition that is open to all wounded, injured and sick serving personnel and veterans.

“I wish all those taking part in the trials the best of luck,” Britain's Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said.

“Having made great sacrifices while protecting their country, they are rising to a new challenge with strength and determination.

“The Invictus Games will provide inspiration and opportunity and will demonstrate the importance of sport in the recovery process.”

The 2016 Invictus Games were officially launched at the White House last October following a meeting between Prince Harry, United States' President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama and Second Lady Jill Biden.

Prince Harry met with wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women undertaking recovery and rehabilitation programmes at Fort Belvoir military base, alongside Michelle Obama and Biden, during the visit.

Tickets for the event in Orlando are due to go on sale in February and tickets can be reserved by clicking here.
