Malaysia’s Para-cyclists made a fine start to the 2016 Asian Cycling Championships by earning gold in the men’s visually impaired time trial in Japan.

Held on Oshima Island, the competition was pushed back a day as a result of high winds but the Malaysia duo of Muhd Khairul Adha Rasol and Muhd Amin Najmi Romzi were undeterred by the conditions when the event went ahead today.

The tandem riders produced an excellent performance on the 22 kilometres course to cross the finishing line in a time of 37min 50sec.

It eventually gave them a comfortable margin of victory, with their compatriots Hafiz Sufian and Muhd Afiq Rizan Afify proving to be their closest rivals.

The pair were unable to provide a genuine threat to their team-mates, however, as they clocked 41:29.

Having secured a one-two finish, Malaysian hopes of earning a second berth in the Rio 2016 Paralympic road events were handed a boost, as they earned further ranking points towards their tally.

They will have further opportunities to earn points for the Paralympics with track events also due to take place at the Championships, with both pairings expected to take to the start line for the track time trial race next week in Shizuoka.

In total 27 countries are scheduled to appear at the Championships, which includes both Para and able-bodied competitions.

In the able-bodied men’s under-23 time trial, Mongolia’s Maral-Erdene Batmunkh produced the fastest time of the day to claim the gold medal.

He clocked 45:22 at the end of the 33km course, with Hong Kong’s Fung Ka Hoo and Japan’s Yamamoto Masaki earning the remaining podium places having clocked 46:10 and 46:26 respectively.

In the men’s junior event Kazakhstan’s Vadim Pronskiy earned gold in 30:55, with Iran’s Amir Hoss Jamshidian just over a second adrift to win silver.

Japan’s Ayumu Watanabe was a further five seconds back to claim bronze.
