Hockey Ireland are seeking applications for their vacant chief executive position ©Hockey Ireland

Hockey Ireland have started the search for a new  chief executive with the successful candidate due to lead the organisation into the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro later this year, the first time the country have qualified for the tournament in 108 years.

They are seeking to find a replacement for Mike Heskin, who joined the National University of Ireland Galway in November, having served in his role since 2012.

Candidates for the position have been invited to submit a CV and letter of interest explaining why they should be appointed to the post, with Hockey Ireland seeking to continue the recent success of their teams.

It follows their men’s team qualifying for Rio 2016 after finishing fifth at the World Hockey League semi-final in Antwerp last July, ensuring their first appearance in the Olympics since London 1908.

Additionally, they will be the first squad to represent Ireland in a team sport at the Olympics since they took part in the basketball tournament at London 1948.

The chief executive will be tasked with providing a vision, leadership and direction to Hockey Ireland and the sport, while supporting the President Richard Kendrick and the voluntary Board of Directors, to whom they will report to.

They will also be required to represent the country nationally and internationally, lead the delivery of strategic and operational plans, and ensure an effective and economic use of resources.

Hockey Ireland have also announced the death of their former President Herbie Sharman following a long illness.

“All associated with Hockey Ireland will mourn his passing,” said Kendrick.

“Herbie was a man to be admired, not only for his commitment to life in general and hockey in particular, but also the courage and unwavering optimism with which he faced the trials of his illness.”
