Jonas Lenherr secured the first International Ski Federation (FIS) Ski Cross World Cup title of his career as the Swiss held his nerve in the final in Watles, Italy, today.

The 26-year-old displayed his form throughout the duration of the day by winning four straight heats to advance to the final four.

Following Jean-Frederic Chapuis’ victory yesterday, when he led home a French clean-sweep, it came as a surprise when he was eliminated in the quarter-finals, while Jonathan Midol was the only Frenchman to reach the final.

However, the race went to form as Lenherr continued his excellent displays on the day, after he made the most of an error by Canada’s Brady Leman to earn his maiden triumph on the circuit.

Lenherr was joined on the podium by his team-mate Alex Fiva, who ended as the runner-up, while Leman came home in third position.

“It was a great day today and it feels awesome to stand on the podium with Alex,” said Lenherr.

“I’m looking forward to the next race already and I hope I will be able to repeat my performance.”

Despite his early exit, Chapuis remains top of the overall standings on 470 points, with Leman now second on 410.

Meanwhile, in the women’s competition, Marielle Thompson defied a slow start to the final to overtake her rivals and clinch an impressive victory.

The Canadian was able to catch France’s Ophelie David and was then able to sweep past Sweden’s Anna Holmlund and Germany’s Heidi Zacher in the closing metres to end top of the podium.

After adding a second place finish to her victory yesterday, Holmlund was able to strengthen her position as the overall World Cup leader, having moved onto 590 points.

Her superb run of displays has now led to the Swede being 201 points ahead of her nearest challenger, Alizee Baron of France, while Zacher’s podium finish today has moved her into third position on 339.
