Gary Jones has been appointed by Jersey as its Chef de Mission for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast, it has been announced.

He will be supported by Morag Obarska, who will be the team manager.

Jones had acted as the team manager for Jersey's triathlon team at the 2002 and 2006 Commonwealth Games in Manchester and Melbourne respectively.

He had also managed Britain's age-group teams at the European Duathlon Championship in 2007 and 2008.

Jones, the athlete's representative to the Commonwealth Games Association of Jersey, was delighted with his appointment.

"To be nominated and elected as the Chef de Mission for the Jersey team for the Gold Coast is a huge honour and privilege," Jones, former deputy principal of Highlands College on the island, said.

"I’m looking forward to working with coaches, athletes and team managers and we hope to make Gold Coast 2018 a wonderful experience for everyone who is involved."

Obarska had been the team's physiotherapist for the last three Commonwealth Game, including Glasgow 2014.

Jersey has competed in every Commonwealth Games since 1958 when it made its debut in Cardiff.

It has won a total of three medals, two of which came at Auckland in 1990.

It included the island's only gold medal, Colin Mallett taking victory in the open full bore rifle.

At Glasgow 2014 Jersey sent a team of 40 athletes, their biggest ever.

Their best performance again came in the shooting when Barry le Cheminant and Dan Richardson finished fifth in the full bore pairs event.
