The International Ski Federation (FIS) has announced the Ski Cross World Cup in La Plagne, France, on January 15 and 16 has been switched to Watles due to a lack of snow.

Unseasonably warm weather in the region forced the postponement of the event, which will now be held in the Italian resort on January 16 and 17.

Two competitions will now be held during the event after a Ski Cross World Cup in Watles, due to take place from January 9 to 10, was also cancelled because of persistent high temperatures and a complete lack of a snow base.

It was scheduled to be the opening competition in the discipline to be held in 2016.

The FIS has, however, received a boost after two of its events passed the snow control phase and will take place as planned.

The Alpine Snowboard World Cup in Bad Gastein, scheduled for January 9 and 10, was given a positive test by officials from skiing’s world governing body after artificial snow was used to create a suitable snow layer for the competition, which includes parallel slalom races.

Reigning world parallel giant slalom champion Claudia Riegler praised the effort of those involved in getting the course ready, claiming officials had “done an extraordinary job”.

The Alpine Skiing World Cup event in Flachau, featuring a women’s slalom race, will also be held as planned on January 12 following official snow control.

The warm weather has put paid to several FIS World Cup events across the various disciplines which were scheduled for January, including the Freestyle Skiing World Cup moguls and aerials competitions in Lake Placid, due to take place from January 14 to 16 in the two-time Winter Olympic host resort.

Other cancelled competitions include the Nordic Combined World Cup in Schonach, Germany from January 9 to 10.
