Caravan insurance specialists Caravan Guard have presented double Paralympic three-time World Championship gold medallist Hannah Cockroft with a cheque of £2,000 ($2,950/€2,700) as she builds towards Rio 2016.

It is the seventh consecutive year that the Halifax-based company have sponsored their local athlete, winner of the T34 100 metres and 200m gold medals at London 2012.

The money is designed to help the Cockroft, who was left with disabilities after suffering two cardiac arrests shortly after her birth, maintain her preparations for the defence of her two titles in Brazil next September.

Cockcroft plans to use  money for replacement wheels, tyres, gloves, speedometers, physio and travel expenses to competitions.

“For me to have a local, home-town sponsor is so nice,” she said.

“Caravan Guard has been there since right at the beginning – before I won anything and it’s nice they are following me throughout my whole career.

“They were that pathway to the gold medal because they got me the chair that I raced my first World Championships.”

Cockroft looks on track to repeat her success from London having earned triple gold at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) World Athletics Championships in Doha last October.

Her victories in the T34 100m, 400m and 800m took her overall tally of world titles to seven, having won two at both the 2011 and 2013 editions of the event.

The 23-year-old, who also is sponsored by law firm Irwin Mitchell, took the three gold medals earned in Qatar’s capital city to the Caravan Guard headquarters to show their staff following the extension of the sponsorship.

“We were delighted Hannah took time out of her busy schedule to come and visit us,” said Ryan Wilby, managing director of Caravan Guard.

“We’re proud to have sponsored her throughout her racing career.”
