Olympic wrestling gold medallist Karam Gaber will miss the Rio 2016 Games after he failed in a bid to have his two-year ban overturned at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

The Egyptian, who won the 96kg Greco-Roman title at Athens 2004, was suspended by governing body United World Wrestling (UWW) in August after it was adjudged that he either missed doping tests or failed to file them.

He was banned from August 27, prompting an appeal to the CAS which was spearheaded by Egypt's sports ministry.

This has now been dismissed, according to media in the African country, which rules him out of competing in the Brazilian city next summer.

The news is a big blow for Egyptian sport as the wrestler is one of the country's most celebrated Olympians.

In addition to his gold in Athens, he also claimed a silver medal in the 84kg event at London 2012.

Gaber also has two World Championship silver medals in his collection, won in the 96kg discipline in Moscow in 2002 and Créteil in 2003.

At 36-years-old, he may now have seen his last action in the Olympic wrestling arena.
