Pyeongchang 2018 has signed an agreement aimed at breaking down language barriers ahead of the Winter Olympics and Paralympics in just under three years' time.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been penned with both the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning (MSIP) and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) as the South Korean host prepares to welcome multi-lingual guests from around the world.

The deal will facilitate translation and interpretations with approximately 1.5 million tourists expected in Pyeongchang, in addition to 100 National Olympic Committees, athletes, officials and media.

It is hoped that automatic interpretation and translation technology will cover seven languages and help remove any problems for people who don't speak or read Korean.

The MOU was signed in South Korea's capital Seoul, with Kim Yong-soo, the MSIP Director General of Information and Communications Policy, present alongside MCST Director General of Sports and Tourism Policy, Kim Jae-won.

Kim Sang-pyo, the Vice President of Venues and Infrastructure, represented Pyeongchang 2018.

He said: "Language services have been provided on a limited basis for protocol purposes until now, however now Pyeongchang 2018 will serve as a benchmark where everyone from all over the world can enjoy automatic interpretation and translation services regardless of time and place.”

A working group has been established to work on the project, with the MSIP in charge of improving the quality of translations.

They have already completed their work with English, Chinese and Japanese, with French and Spanish still to be developed in addition to plans for German and Russian.

The MCST will promote the service and place more focus on host cities, while Pyeongchang 2018 will deliver the technology and trial it at test events next year.

The 2018 Winter Olympics will take place between February 9 and 25.
