Argentina have climbed to second position in the International Hockey Federation (FIH) women’s world rankings following their victory at the Hockey World League Final in front of a home crowd in Rosario.

The hosts had begun the tournament third in the rankings but after progressing to the final, where they beat New Zealand 5-1, they have moved onto a total of 2,063 points.

It helped them to leapfrog Australia in the overall rankings, after they endured a disappointing sixth place finish saw them finish the year on 2,003 points.

Argentina’s rise will boost their hopes that they can deliver elusive the gold medal at Rio 2016, having won silver twice and bronze on two further occasions in the previous four Olympic Games.

Reigning Olympic and world champions The Netherlands were defeated in the last eight of the Hockey World League final by Argentina but retain their status as the world number one ranked team, with 2,188 points.

China, England/Britain and the United States all remain in fourth to seventh positions respectively, where they began prior to the tournament, but Germany’s victory over China in the third place play-off has seen them move to 1,558 points to go ahead of South Korea into eighth.

Their silver medal, after a 2-1 defeat to Australia, has seen them move onto 1,630 points to leapfrog Argentina and the hosts India, now sixth and seventh respectively.

Tournament winners and World Cup holders Australia remain on top of the rankings on 2,253 points, while The Netherlands and Olympic champions Germany remain in the top three on 2,095 and 1,783 points respectively.
