New Zealand shrugged off their tag as a "fourth place" team as they beat Germany 2-1 in the semi-finals of the Women's Hockey World League finals in Rosario today.

The Kiwis have finished one place outside of the top three at the last three major tournaments but shook that monkey from their back after a fine performance which has booked a final showdown with hosts Argentina tomorrow.

They took the lead after just nine minutes when Stacey Michelesen intercepted a cross field pass to present Kirsten Pearce with an excellent chance from which she made no mistake.

The advantage was doubled with 25 minutes on the clock after Liz Thompson fired home from a penalty corner.

Germany hit back when Eileen Hoffman netted from a rebound which followed a penalty corner, but the New Zealanders were not to be denied as they held on to advance to the final.

"The biggest thing for us was to make the final," said Kiwi goalkeeper Sally Rutherford.

"The last three major tournaments we have played in, we have finished fourth, so it is nice to get over that hurdle."

In the second semi-final, hosts Argentina went in front against China when Maria Pilar Campoy's deflected effort found the net.

That proved to be enough for as the home crowd roared on their charges to a 1-0 success.

Earlier in the day, Great Britain secured seventh place at the International Hockey Federation (FIH) event, beating South Korea 5-1.

Fifth spot went to defending champions The Netherlands, who beat Australia 1-0.
