Great Britain followed up their victory against Canada yesterday by overcoming world number one ranked Australia on day three of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Men's World League Final in Raipur.

Goals from Henry Weir and Chris Grassick put Britain into a 2-0 lead after 13 minutes, and although Jeremy Hayward halved the deficit, the Australians found themselves 4-1 behind just after the half-hour mark as Ian Sloan and David Condon both got their names on the scoresheet.

Matt Gohdes fired home in the 47th minute to give Australia hope, but it was dashed moments later when Phil Roper scored to seal a 5-2 victory for Britain.

"It was a tough physical battle as you expect when you face Australia but we did well to come through it," said Britain’s head coach Bobby Crutchley.

"We've always said the best teams have 25 players capable of playing in these games and we want to build that sort of squad size for ourselves."

Two wins out of two for Britain sees them top the Pool A standings in the Indian city, followed by Belgium who bounced back from a narrow defeat against Australia yesterday to beat Canada 7-2 earlier today.

Sébastien Dockier, Florent van Aubel, Thomas Briels and Jérôme Truyens, who was making his 300th international appearance, all chipped in to establish a 4-0 advantage for Belgium with less than 15 minutes on the clock.

Canada improved considerably in the second and third quarters, with Mark Pearson reducing the arrears ahead of a stunning flicked finish from Devohn Noronha Teixeira.

However, Belgium moved back into top gear in the final quarter, with Arthur van Doren and Tom Boon on target before Van Aubel claimed his second to ensure his country's first win of the competition.

"It is always great to have a win in such circumstances, and also to score," said Truyens, who made his international debut in 2004.

"The fact that my team has won and everyone has been congratulating me has been really special.

"You always want to score on such occasions, so I am happy that I have done that.

"What matters is the three points today."
