Reigning men’s under 90 kilogram world champion Gwak Dong-han continued his domination at the Jeju Grand Prix as the 23-year-old triumphed in front of his home crowd for the third consecutive season, beating France’s Axel Clerget.

The South Korean had needed a golden score to beat Greece’s Ilias Iliadis in the semi-final, but he brushed aside the challenge of Clerget in the gold medal bout by scoring with a yuko, before adding a waza-ari in the closing stages.

Iliadis recovered from his semi-final defeat by defeating Hungary’s Krisztian Toth with an ippon to claim the first bronze, while Kirill Denisov received the other minor medal as his fellow Russian Magomed Magomedov was disqualified after receiving four shido penalties.

A second home triumph was secured by Cho Guham in the men’s under 100kg division, as the Tokyo Grand Slam winner produced a stunning ippon to defeat the Pan American Games bronze medallist Jose Armenteros of Cuba.

There was also disappointment for the Pan American Games champion Luciano Correa, with the Brazilian judoka succumbing to an osaekomi by Russia’s Tagir Khaibulaev to lose the first bronze medal contest by ippon.

Azerbaijan’s Elmar Gasimov defeated 21-year-old Japanese judoka Kensuke Sakamoto by an ippon to also reach the podium.

Despite the early successes for their judokas in the men’s events a South Korean hat-trick of golds was always likely to be denied, with France’s eight-time world champion Teddy Riner having been unbeaten in the men’s over 100kg event since 2010.

Facing the home favourite Kim Sung-Min in a Grand Prix final for the second consecutive week, having beaten him in the Chinese city of Qingdao, Riner brushed aside his opponent’s challenge with an ippon to end his season in style.

Russia’s Andrey Volkov claimed bronze in the same manner by overcoming Azerbaijan’s Ushangi Kokauri, while The Netherlands’ Roy Meyer defeated Cuba’s Alex Garcia Mendoza on shido penalties to earn his place on the podium.

Further French gold came in the women’s under 90kg event as Audrey Tcheumeo received a walkover in the final after the Olympic champion Kayla Harrison was forced to withdraw, with the American having dislocated her shoulder in an earlier bout.

Britain’s Gemma Gibbons and Japan’s Rika Takayama claimed bronze medals after defeating The Netherlands’ Guusje Steenhuis and Mongolia’s Lkhamdegd Purevjargal in their respective contests.

Meanwhile in the women’s over 100kg division, Japan’s Sarah Asahina earned gold after a series of impressive displays with the 19-year-old sealing the win by defeating Turkey’s Belkis Zehra Kaya in the final.

Iryna Kindzerska of Ukraine earned the first bronze by beating France’s Marine Erb with an ippon, while reigning Olympic champion Idalys Ortiz missed out on the podium after the Cuban was beaten on shido penalties by South Korea’s Minjeong Kim.
