Hamburg 2024 has received the backing of its local hotel industry, which has guaranteed that an initial 15,000 rooms will be available for guests from all over the world if the city is successful in its bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Hotels in Hamburg and the nearby city of Kiel, the proposed sailing venue, have shown their support for the bid, which faces competition from Budapest, Los Angeles, Paris and Rome.

"There were more than we had expected," said Nikolas Hill, managing director of the Hamburg 2024 Bid Committee.

"For us, it shows belief in our concept for the Games."

Ulrike von Albedyll, managing director of the Hotel and Restaurant Association Hamburg (DEHOGA) added: "The companies have recognised the enormous and unique potential in hosting the Games."

Hamburg and Kiel will aim to guarantee a minimum of 41,200 rooms in all for the prospective Games.

"We want to be a very good host for all visitors to the Olympic and Paralympic Games and we are confident that the Hamburg and Kiel businesses will support us in this endeavour," said Hill.

"Therefore, we will work together in constant dialogue to increase the number of guaranteed rooms over the next few months.

"Thank you to all establishments, the DEHOGA and the local tourism organisations for their support."

Meanwhile, Hamburg-headquartered supermarket group Edeka has become the first sponsor of the bid.

As a top-tier national partner, Edeka will have exclusive rights in the food trade and nutrition categories.

The deal is set to run until the International Olympic Committee (IOC) makes a decision on the host of the 2024 Games at its session in Peruvian capital Lima in September 2017.

Hill said the Bid Committee was "very pleased" to sign a locally-based partner and given that Edeka has 4,000 stores across the country, claimed it showed that Hamburg 2024 was "for all of Germany".

A crucial public referendum into whether Hamburg should stage the 2024 Games begun earlier this month with ballot papers being distributed to residents.

Around 1.3 million people in Hamburg and a further 200,000 in Kiel are eligible to take part in the vote, with the referendum itself scheduled for November 29.

A recent survey conducted by the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) on the bid revealed 71 per cent of respondents were in favour of bringing the Olympics and Paralympics to the city, but a separate nationwide poll on behalf of Der Spiegel claimed the public would rather stage the European Football Championships in the same year.
