Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka claimed a straight-sets win over home favourite Andy Murray at the ATP World Tour Finals at the O2 Arena in London to set up a last-four encounter with compatriot Roger Federer tomorrow.

The fourth seed prevailed 7-6, 6-4 in his final group match, condemning Murray to elimination after one hour and 53 minutes.

Murray was well positioned in the first set tie-break, holding a 4-2 advantage before Wawrinka rattled off five straight points to take it away from him.

Taking momentum into the second set, Wawrinka broke Murray’s serve at the first opportunity and raced into a 5-2 lead.

The French Open champion began to show some nerves in the eighth game as Murray cut the deficit, but after two break points had come and gone for his British opponent at 5-4, Wawrinka regained his composure to see out the match and secure his place in the semi-finals for a third consecutive year.

"It's always tough to play against Andy, I'm sorry guys," said Wawrinka, addressing the British fans.

"I'll get some rest and try to be ready for tomorrow.

"A lot of people were cheering for me.

"I hope you enjoyed tonight."

Earlier, Rafael Nadal overcame fellow Spaniard David Ferrer 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 ahead of his last-four encounter against world number one Novak Djokovic.

Ferrer, already been eliminated after two defeats, won the first set on a tie-break after each player had broken the other's serve three times.

Nadal edged the second with a solitary break before bursting away at the end of the third to wrap up victory in two hours 37 minutes.

The world number five, who fell as low as 10th in August after a disappointing start to the year, faces Serbian Djokovic in the first of tomorrow’s semi-finals.

"It is very important for me to be finishing the season like this, competing well against the best players," said Nadal.

"Novak is playing almost better than impossible.

"He is achieving almost everything that one player can dream.

"I have to play to the limit of my best to have a chance."
