Hungary’s Katinka Hosszú underlined her domination of the 2015 International Swimming Federation (FINA) World Cup once more after amassing an impressive four medals on the opening day of the eighth and final leg in Dubai today.

The first of Hosszu’s two gold medals came in the women’s 200 metres freestyle, clocking the best winning time of this year’s circuit - 1 min 55.41sec - to claim her sixth victory in the event.

Italy’s Federica Pellegrini took silver in 1:57.42, well short of her 1:52.98 world record, while Great Britain’s Jazmin Carlin rounded off the podium.

Hosszu then completed a 2015 sweep of the women’s 200m individual medley, registering a time of 2:08.61, the fastest of the present World Cup, to finish ahead of the United States’ Caitlin Leverenz and Japan’s Sakiko Shimizu in second and third place respectively.

The Hungarian didn't have everything completely her own way, however, as she had to settle for second in the women's 50m backstroke behind Australia's Emily Seebohm, who clocked 27.57sec, with American Felicia Lee in third.

In her last appearance of the evening, Hosszu seemed to have the women’s 200m backstroke final under control, but a strong final lap from Seebohm earned her victory in 2:06.94, marking a fourth consecutive win in the series for the reigning world champion and also her fastest time of the World Cup.

Meanwhile, the much-awaited men’s 50m breaststroke final saw South Africa's Cameron van der Burgh secure his seventh gold out of seven races contested with a time of 26.77.

Britain’s Adam Peaty, the world champion and world record holder, claimed silver in 27.16, while another South African Giulio Zorzi took bronze.

Among the other highlights of the session was the performance of Australia’s Mitch Larkin in the men’s 100m backstroke, approaching the world record and obtaining the best time of the year in 52.11.

Finishing ahead of the US’s David Plummer and Japan’s Masaki Kaneko, Larkin notched his third consecutive win in the race and was just short of American Aaron Peirsol’s world record of 51.94.

Other notable performances on the day included a comfortable win for Jamaica’s Alia Atkinson in the women’s 100m breaststroke, her fourth of the season and the fastest of them all, in 1:05.93.

In the men’s 100m freestyle, South Africa’s Chad Le Clos was unable to get his third gold medal of the season, finishing second to France’s Jeremy Stravius, who posted 48.34.

Le Clos also wasn’t at his best in the men’s 200m butterfly, conceding victory to the 2014 European champion Viktor Bromer of Denmark, but in the men's 50m butterfly, 2014's FINA Swimmer of the Year finally came away with victory in 23.31.

The last event of the evening saw Hungary’s David Verraszto touch home in 4:16.71 to secure his place at the top of the men’s 400m individual medley podium.
